Registered in Rumson as one of the 250 Historical Homes in Rumson built in 1904.Named Lauriston for Caesar's second wife, the former Laura Unger, the house was erected in a 39-acre segment of the Parmly estate that covered the block between Osprey Lane and Tuxedo Rd. They chose Leon Cubberly, famous architect, to design their new home used for seasonal purposes. Cubberly designed a rectangular Italian Renaissance Revival house with Colonial Revival elements. Caesar was an active sportsman and hunter of large game;he maintained a lodge in Canada for that purpose. His youngest son, Charles Unger Caesar, stayed on at Lauriston, which passed from the family following the 1942 death of Laura. The property had a number of owners in the 1940's, and was subdivided by the 1950's. Three houses were built in front of Lauriston about 1954-1962. In 2001, the current owners applied for the Register Listing. This masterpiece is awaiting an appreciative buyer on its own merits. This 20th century masterpiece will soon warrant a new and masterful owner!
Influenced by the English Picturesque and Associationist Movements, this style borrowed (or associated with), the imagery of the 16th Century Italian Renaissance as well as the indigenous freedom of the Italian Countryside. Its American proliferation found a separation from its Italian formalism, embracing its use of natural materials, low-pitched roof profiles, projecting cornice lines, small porches and opulent craftsmanship.
